Hutchinson’s Torrence takes home Defensive Player of the Year
Charlotte, NC – Hutchinson cornerback Roterius Torrence has been named the 2020-21 NJCAA Football Defensive Player of the Year, presented by the Marines.
Torrence, a 6-foot-3 sophomore, totaled 23 tackles, five pass break ups and one interception, which came in the NJCAA Championship Game. Torrence earned the respect of the KJCCC coaches by allowing only one player to catch a pass against him this season.
"Ro plays extremely physical at the line of scrimmage in press coverage and fits very well in coverage on the down-field throws," said Hutchinson head coach Drew Dallas. "His presence on the field was instrumental in our success as a defensive unit. Nearly every week, Ro was able to eliminate the opposing teams best offensive threat at the wide receiver position. This is a tremendous individual honor for him and I am extremely proud of Ro's progression and development at the cornerback position because of how hard he works and his professional approach to the game."
Torrence helped the Blue Dragons to its first national championship title and its third undefeated season in program history (also, 1947 and 1969).
The sophomore becomes just the second player from Hutchinson to be selected for a Player of the Year award, joining Eugene Kinlaw who was also named the Defensive Player of the Year in 2008.
In addition to the Defensive Player of the Year award, Torrence garnered a NJCAA First-Team All-America honor and was awarded the 2020-21 KJCCC Defensive Player of the Year. The sophomore's KJCCC Defensive Player of the Year award marked the third straight season a Blue Dragon has captured the honor, joining Latrell Bankston (2019) and Monty Montgomery (2018).
