Indian River State catcher Jake Weatherspoon named DI Baseball Defensive Player of the Year
Charlotte, NC: Indian River State College (FL) catcher Jake Weatherspoon has been named the 2025 NJCAA Division I Baseball Defensive Player of the Year.
Weatherspoon appeared in 46 games for The River and was behind the plate for 30 of them. The sophomore threw out 15 runners stealing from behind the plate, holding a .625 percentage. Weatherspoon had a total of 272 putouts on the season and only three errors, earning a .989 fielding percentage. The catcher led The River to a 34-16 record and a regional appearance in the South Atlantic District Tournament.
"Jake has all the attributes that a coach could want in a catcher. He is a leader, has great defensive skills as well as elite poise behind the plate," said Indian River State head baseball coach Frank Torre.
The Melbourne, Florida, native was also a strong hitter for The River. He finished the season with a .374 batting average, with 50 RBI, and 39 runs scored. Weatherspoon was named to the 2025 FCSAA First-Team and a First-Team All-Citrus conference.
"Jake exemplifies what being a student-athlete is all about. His work ethic on the field and in the classroom will continue to separate him in all walks of life," Coach Torre said.
