Yuma, Oxford earn DI softball bids
The DI softball championship will spend another two years out West before making a move to Alabama in 2023
Charlotte, NC - The NJCAA has awarded a pair of cities the right to host upcoming Division I softball championships. Yuma, AZ and Oxford, AL will each serve a two-year stint as host to the NJCAA Division I Softball Championship.
Yuma, in the southwestern corner of Arizona, is home to NJCAA member Arizona Western College. The brand-new state of the art Pacific Avenue Athletic Complex will host the 16-team tournament in 2021 and 2022.
“We are really pleased with the NJCAA’s selection of Yuma as the host of the Softball National Championship for the next two years," stated Jerry Smith, Arizona Western Athletic Director. "Arizona Western College and the City of Yuma are teaming up to make this an unforgettable event for the student-athletes, coaches, and fans. Our efforts, in tandem with the NJCAA, will give those who participate the chance to savor the fruits of their labor and know they are representing the best of what the country has to offer. In addition to fans and visitors cheering on their favorite team, this event will also showcase the best of the southwest when it comes to hospitality, tourism, and enjoyment.”
Yuma last hosted an NJCAA championship event when the city was the site of the 2016 NJCAA Football Championship.
Following the tournament's time in Yuma, the event will move to Oxford, AL, situated nearly halfway between Birmingham and Atlanta. Choccolocco Park, which will also play host to the next two Division II softball championships, opened in 2017 and has played host to numerous other local and national tournaments; including Alabama regional high school games and Ohio Valley Conference tournaments.
"We are so excited to welcome the NJCAA to Choccolocco Park for the upcoming years," stated Taylor Sloan, City of Oxford Public Information Officer. "We look forward to working with the NJCAA."
