Lincoln moves on in Danville with win over Morton

Danville, IL- Lincoln College started the game off on the right foot by getting 6 quick points from starting forward Bryce Davis, 2 of which were from a transition power dunk. Lincoln continued their early rally to get up 15-9 with 13 minutes left in the first half. Morton eventually got some key defensive stops to close the lead to 1 point with 9 minutes left in the half. The score remained a stalemate for the next 2 minutes until Morton hit a big 3-pointer to take the 24-22 lead with 7 minutes left in the half. There was another 2 minute scoring stalemate until the 5 minute mark where Morton added an easy lay-up to their 2 point lead. Lincoln capitalized on a couple of turnovers that eventually gave them the 32-31 lead with under a minute, but Morton grabbed an offensive rebound as time expired to give them the 33-32 lead at half.

The game continued as if a halftime break never took place. The scored stayed within a point until the clock hit the 15 minute mark. At this point, Lincoln's Darius Adams and Don Gavin were both fouled while scoring a basket for the chance of a 3-point play. The momentum quickly swung Lincoln's way and was topped off by a deep 3-point basketball by Darius Adams, giving their team a 48-40 lead with 13 minutes remaining in the game. Within the next couple of minutes, Lincoln's Cortez Augusta finished another 3-point play to put his team up 53-43 with 12 minutes to play. This forced Morton Head Coach Frank Lollino Jr. to call a timeout to regain their composure. After the timeout, Morton continued to struggle offensively by only scoring 3 points in the next 5 minutes of play. Lincoln evenutally increased their lead to 58-46 and never looked back. The lead remained around 10 points for the remainder of the game. Morton scrambled to put some points on the board at the end, but couldn't overcome Lincoln's offense. Lincoln took the win with a final score of 75-63.
Lincoln College will advance to the 2nd round to play #2 ranked Cecil Community College on Thursday at 8:30 PM. Cecil received the blind draw for the 1st round bye. Morton College will continue in the consolation bracket and will face South Suburban College on Friday at 11:00 AM.
