Tyler tops Joliet for 2nd consecutive DIII Baseball Championship

KINSTON, N.C. – With a 10-9 victory over Joliet (Ill.) Wednesday, Tyler (Texas) won its second consecutive NJCAA Division III baseball championship.
Leading the Apaches offense in the shootout was catcher Brandon Webb. The sophomore went 3-for-5 with a double, home run and three RBIs.
Tyler sophomore first baseman Reid Russell chipped in with a double and an RBI in a 2-for-5 outing at the plate. Sophomore shortstop Tim Hunter, sophomore center fielder Zane Otten, freshman left fielder Zane Ancell and sophomore designated hitter Derek Clemons each recorded an RBI for the Apaches in the victory.
On the mound, it was Tyler freshman Drew Robertson picking up the win with 1 2/3 hitless innings where he notched two strikeouts. Sophomore Cody Brown earned the save for the Apaches with three consecutive strikeouts in the bottom of the ninth inning.
Spearheading Joliet’s offensive effort was sophomore Colten Trager. Going 1-for-2, the designated hitter hit a two-run double and was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to total a team-high three RBIs on the night. Wolves sophomore right fielder David Hill recorded two RBIs, while sophomore second baseman Cameron Bass and catcher T.J. Condon each tallied one.
With a perfect 4-0 record at the World Series, the Apaches extended their win streak to 16 games and improved their final overall record to 41-8. Tyler is the first program to win back-to-back national titles since Richland (Texas) won three straight from 2002-04.
Going 3-2 in the tournament, Joliet finished with a 38-25 record for the season.
