Scovel earns second straignt DI Coach of the Year award

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The NJCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Committee announced Wednesday Gulf Coast State (FL) head coach Mary “Roonie” Scovel as the 2017 Spalding® NJCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Coach of the Year.

The honor is the second consecutive for Scovel after leading the Commodores to back-to-back national titles. Gulf Coast State capped off an impressive 2017 campaign with a 34-2 record and the program’s fifth national championship (2003, 2008, 2010, 2016, 2017) – all under the direction of Scovel.

Scovel’s 2017 team ranked in the top 10 nationally in points per game (85.9), free-throw percentage (72.3), three-point field goal percentage (37.8) and blocks (5.9). 

Before taking over as the leader of the women’s basketball program at Gulf Coast State, Scovel coached at Laurel Hill High School in Laurel Hill, FL. Scovel coached the Hoboes to a state championship in 1995 and runner-up finish in 1996.
