COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- Helping the Century College (MN) Wood Ducks to a fourth-place finish at the NJCAA DIII World Series in his inaugural season, freshman Ryan Hennen has been named the 2017 Spalding® NJCAA DIII Pitcher of the Year.
“I am truly humbled to be named the NJCAA DIII Pitcher of the Year,” Hennen said. “There are many talented pitchers in our division, so to receive this award is such an honor. I have really enjoyed my time being a Wood Duck so far. We had a great season this year taking fourth at the World Series and it was an honor to play with such a talented group of guys.”
Hennen posted an unblemished record of 7-0 on the mound with 12 total appearances while registering a 1.80 earned run average. Hennen’s highlight performance of the season came in a 4-0 win over Rainy River Community College in the NJCAA District F Tournament where the freshman tossed a complete game shutout with 14 strikeouts and zero walks.
For the season, Hennen racked up a total of 71 strikeouts on the year opposed to just 13 walks in 65 innings of work.
Century head coach Dwight Kotila pointed to a number of factors that led to Hennen receiving the honor. “We are so honored that Ryan has been named the NJCAA DIII Pitcher of the Year. Ryan had a great freshman year for us. His ability to command the strike zone with all of his pitches, combined with his mental toughness, was very impressive.”
“Not only did Ryan have a great year on the field,” Kotila added, “he also excelled in the classroom and has a great work ethic. He is very deserving of this honor.”
Hennen is currently working towards the completion of a general studies degree and hopes to major in Athletic Training in his future.
