COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- For his efforts in guiding Dyersburg State (TN) to its first-ever NJCAA Division I World Series, Seth Hougesen has been named the 2017 Spalding® NJCAA Division I Pitcher of the Year as selected by the Division I Baseball Committee.
Hougesen posted a 14-1 record on the year, the most victories among all NJCAA pitchers en route to the Eagles’ Region 7 and East Central District championships. The southpaw tossed five complete games in 2017 with a total of 92.1 innings of work on the mound. A sophomore from Indianapolis, IN, Hougesen racked up 107 strikeouts on the year, including a season-high 12 punch-outs in the district tournament.
“Getting this award means so much to me,” Hougesen exclaimed. “It just reminds me of all the hard work I have put in ever since I was in high school. In high school I never would have thought that I would have made it to where I am today but by putting my nose to the grindstone and just putting my faith in God I ended up in Dyersburg, Tennessee playing for an amazing coach and with the best group of guys I could have ever asked for.”
Hougesen extended his thoughts on the impact Dyersburg had on his success. “We had a record setting season at Dyersburg and it was all due to us busting our butts on and off the field and having a coaching staff that cared so much about all of us.”
Hougesen, who is committed to play at the University of Illinois at Chicago next season and study sports management, helped Dyersburg to a 48-9 record. “I will never forget Dyersburg and our time together- ‘Dirtybird’ for life."
